This Wasn't in the Plan
Adversity, Perspective, and Moving Forward
What this experience explores
Sometimes the plan fails. A project collapses, funding disappears, a team is restructured, or something unexpected reshapes what everyone thought came next. This experience is about how people and teams respond when life or work takes a turn no one planned for.
Ton draws on his own story of navigating unexpected adversity to help teams reframe setbacks not as failures to power through but as moments that can reshape perspective and direction. The session explores how to maintain perspective during difficult transitions, how to support others when the plan falls apart, and how to find a meaningful way forward without pretending everything is easy.
The goal is not toxic positivity. It is honest resilience: the ability to acknowledge what went wrong, grieve what was lost, and still choose a meaningful next step.
How the session runs
This is not a lecture. Ton uses storytelling, interactive activities, and guided conversation to help participants reflect on their own experiences of unexpected adversity. Activities are designed to create space for honesty about what setbacks actually feel like, rather than rushing toward solutions.
Small-group discussion and reflective prompts help participants examine how they typically respond when things go wrong, what they need from their team in those moments, and what it looks like to support a colleague whose plan just fell apart. The session moves from story into reflection, ending with practical tools for navigating unexpected transitions together.
